Historic Landmarks, Coastal Views & Distinctive Places to Explore

Portland has a character all of its own. It feels separate — not just geographically, reached by the narrow causeway from Weymouth, but in atmosphere too. The sea shapes everything here: the scenery, the stone, and the stories.

Portland has plenty to do, especially if you’re exploring with children. When our two were young, the first thing they wanted to do was climb the lighthouse at Portland Bill—a milestone they talked about for weeks once they were finally tall enough.

As they grew, we found more to explore together: the windswept ruins of Portland Castle, the sculpture‑lined trails of Tout Quarry, and the dramatic views around the Bill.
