Discover Knoll Beach, Shell Bay and the Sand Dunes

Studland Beach stretches for nearly four miles, a sweep of soft, pale sand backed by rolling dunes and open heathland. The water here is often calm, clear and shallow. On still mornings, the sea can look almost glassy; on warm afternoons, it shimmers in shades of blue and green.

It’s one of the reasons Studland’s beaches remain so loved. There’s room to breathe here, whether you settle among the dunes with a book, walk the shoreline at low tide, or simply watch the light shift across the bay.

Our children learned to swim here in the open sea. The gradual slope of the shore gave them confidence, and on calm days, the bay feels protective rather than wild. In summer, the little ice cream boat often drifts close to shore, something they never once missed.

Knoll Beach is the main National Trust section, with facilities and parking nearby. Middle Beach feels a little quieter and more secluded, while Shell Bay sits at the far end of the peninsula near the Sandbanks ferry crossing, where the water widens, and sunsets can be spectacular.

There is also a clearly signposted naturist section at Studland, separate from the main family areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Studland Beach?

Studland Bay stretches for approximately four miles.

Is Studland Beach dog-friendly?

Studland is dog-friendly for much of the year. However, restrictions apply between 1 May and 30 September.

At Shell Bay, there is a designated dog-friendly area during the summer months, so you can still enjoy the sand and sea with your four-legged companion. Outside the summer restrictions, dogs are welcome along much of the four-mile stretch of beach and dunes, making it a wonderful place for long coastal walks at any time of year.

Where do you park for Studland Beach?

Knoll Beach car park is the main National Trust car park. Shell Bay also has parking near the ferry. In summer, it gets very busy, so we recommend arriving early.

Is Studland Beach sandy?

Yes, it’s one of Dorset’s best sandy beaches.

What is the Studland Ferry?

The Sandbanks–Studland chain ferry links the peninsula to Poole and runs regularly throughout the year.
