Explore Things to Do in Portland, Dorset
Discover Portland’s Historic Landmarks, Coastal Walks and Hidden Gems
Few places in Dorset feel quite like Portland. Connected to the mainland by the sweeping Chesil Beach causeway, the island has a rugged character shaped by the sea, its world-famous stone and centuries of maritime history. Just minutes from our Weymouth holiday cottages, it’s one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips on the Jurassic Coast. Whether you’re spending a week exploring from one of our Dorset holiday cottages or simply visiting for the day, Portland’s dramatic scenery, fascinating history and unique atmosphere make it somewhere we never tire of returning to.
Portland has always been a favourite family day out for us. When our children were younger, climbing the 155 steps to the top of Portland Bill Lighthouse was a real milestone and something they talked about for weeks afterwards. As they’ve grown older, we’ve found ourselves returning for different reasons, from exploring Tout Quarry Sculpture Park and Portland Castle to walking the dramatic cliffs around Portland Bill before stopping for lunch overlooking the sea. Every visit reveals something different.

Things To Do

Why We Love Portland
What makes Portland so special is its variety. One visit might be spent discovering its maritime history, another walking the South West Coast Path, exploring hidden coves or watching the waves crash against Portland Bill. It feels wonderfully different from anywhere else in Dorset, yet it’s only minutes from Weymouth, making it one of our favourite places to recommend to guests looking to experience another side of the Jurassic Coast.
Portland is one of those places that’s changed with us over the years. We’ve watched the waves crash over Portland Bill during winter storms, climbed the lighthouse with our children, explored Tout Quarry on quiet autumn afternoons and returned countless times simply to watch the sunset from the clifftops. Every visit feels a little different, which is why it’s somewhere we never hesitate to recommend to guests wanting to experience one of Dorset’s most dramatic and distinctive landscapes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. Portland offers a very different experience from many of Dorset’s seaside destinations. Its dramatic cliffs, fascinating maritime history, historic landmarks and spectacular Jurassic Coast scenery make it one of our favourite places to recommend. We’ve visited countless times over the years, from watching winter storms crash against Portland Bill to enjoying quieter autumn walks through Tout Quarry. Whatever the season, there’s always something new to discover.
Portland is home to some of Dorset’s most distinctive attractions, including Portland Bill Lighthouse, Portland Castle, Rufus Castle, Portland Museum, Tout Quarry Sculpture Park, the Castletown D-Day Centre, Church Ope Cove and the remarkable High Angle Battery. Together they showcase Portland’s unique mix of history, military heritage, coastal scenery and world-famous geology.
Yes. Portland Bill Lighthouse stands proudly at the southern tip of the island and remains one of Dorset’s most recognisable landmarks. During the visitor season you can climb the lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views across the Jurassic Coast and the English Channel.
The lighthouse is open to visitors during seasonal opening periods, with guided climbs taking you up 155 steps to the lantern room. From the top you’ll enjoy spectacular views across the Jurassic Coast and, on clear days, can often spot the famous Portland Race, where powerful tidal currents have created one of Britain’s most challenging stretches of sea. Before travelling, it’s worth checking the official opening times on the lighthouse’s website.
Dogs are welcome on the surrounding headland and the spectacular South West Coast Path, although they aren’t permitted inside the lighthouse tower itself. We often see walkers enjoying this stretch of coastline with their dogs, particularly around Portland Bill and towards Church Ope Cove. If you’re planning to bring your four-legged companion, our collection of dog-friendly holiday cottages makes an excellent base for exploring Dorset’s coast.
Definitely. Some of our favourite family memories are from Portland, particularly the day our children were finally tall enough to climb Portland Bill Lighthouse, something they talked about for weeks afterwards. Families also enjoy exploring Portland Castle, searching the rock pools around Portland Bill and discovering the sculptures hidden throughout Tout Quarry. If you’re planning a family break, our collection of family-friendly holiday cottages offers a great base for exploring this part of Dorset.
Absolutely. Portland is one of Dorset’s best destinations for walkers. The South West Coast Path circles much of the island, passing Portland Bill, dramatic cliff tops, hidden coves and spectacular viewpoints. We particularly enjoy quieter walks through Tout Quarry Sculpture Park, where art, nature and Portland’s quarrying history combine in a way that’s unlike anywhere else in Dorset.
Portland is perfectly placed for exploring many of Dorset’s best attractions. Within a short drive you’ll reach Weymouth, where you can visit Nothe Fort, SEA LIFE Weymouth and the traditional seafront. Nearby Chesil Beach stretches for miles along the Jurassic Coast, while Abbotsbury offers the famous Swannery and Subtropical Gardens. Together they make it easy to enjoy a varied Dorset holiday.
If you’re planning to explore Portland alongside the wider Jurassic Coast, many of our guests choose one of our Weymouth holiday cottages, which provide easy access to the island while remaining close to Weymouth’s beaches, harbour and restaurants. Our Silverlake Estate Collection also offers a peaceful lakeside base within comfortable driving distance of Portland and many of Dorset’s best-loved attractions.
Very much so. Portland’s extensive coastal paths, Portland Bill, Church Ope Cove and many of its open spaces are ideal for exploring with your dog. We’ve often walked these routes ourselves and they remain some of our favourite coastal walks in Dorset. If you’re bringing your dog away with you, our dog-friendly holiday cottages are perfectly placed for discovering Portland and the surrounding Jurassic Coast.
