Explore Weymouth: Beach Days, Harbour Walks and More

Weymouth is a place we return to again and again. The wide, sandy, award‑winning beach is the main attraction, but there are plenty of things to do in Weymouth around the harbour and seafront too.

The beach is often where the day begins. The water remains shallow near the shore, making it particularly suitable for families, swimmers, and those trying paddleboarding for the first time. Down in the harbour, you’ll see fishing boats arriving and departing, and it’s also the starting point for boat cruises, fishing trips, and fast RIB rides that offer a very different view of the coastline.

There’s a strong sense of history here, too. Nothe Fort, built to defend the coast and later used during the Second World War, still overlooks the bay. The Georgian promenade frames the shoreline, and Weymouth’s food scene has grown steadily — from award‑winning fish and chips by the water to harbour‑side restaurants such as The Catch at the Old Fishmarket, which is featured in the Michelin Guide.

If you’re planning a stay here, explore our Weymouth holiday cottages or browse our dog-friendly cottages — carefully chosen places to stay while you explore the town and surrounding area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Weymouth good for families?

Absolutely. As a family, we’ve always found Weymouth to work brilliantly as a base because everything is easily accessible. The main beach remains shallow near the shore, the promenade is wide and level for buggies, and there’s plenty within walking distance.

Whether it’s crabbing along the harbour wall, enjoying classic seaside amusements, beach rides, or boat trips departing from the harbour. It’s the sort of place where children can fill an entire day without you needing to pack up the car.

What are the best things to do in Weymouth?

It really depends on what you enjoy. Nothe Fort is always worth visiting, particularly for its Second World War history and views across the bay. A cruise along the Jurassic Coast offers a different perspective of the shoreline, and SEA LIFE Weymouth remains a favourite — ours included. Right next door, Pirate Adventure Mini Golf is good fun. Teenagers might like the Skate Park on the Front.

What are the best things to do in Weymouth with kids?

Weymouth Beach is hard to beat because of its space, sand, and safe swimming. SEALIFE remains a popular attraction, as does simple harbour crabbing. In summer, sand sculpting at Sandworld offers something different, and Bowleaze Cove, just outside town, has the Southside Funfair.

There are funfair rides and amusements at Alexandra Gardens too, just a short walk back from the beach. During the season, a variety of rides are available on the beach, including Donkey rides.

What can couples do in Weymouth?

An evening harbour walk followed by dinner overlooking the water is hard to beat. Oliveto Italian Restaurant, on the Pier bandstand, offers wonderful views across the bay, particularly at sunset. A drive towards Portland or Ringstead Bay offers a quieter contrast, and sunset cruises from the harbour can feel very special.

Are there any unusual things to do in Weymouth?

Yes, and they’re often the moments people remember. Crabbing from the harbour wall is a long-standing local tradition. You can explore the tunnels and gun positions at Nothe Fort, take a high-speed RIB ride across the bay, or walk sections of the South West Coast Path straight from town. For something different, try GLOBALLS’ indoor glow-in-the-dark mini golf or join a haunted harbour tour with Weymouth’s Heritage Centre.
