Shipstal Beach
Shipstal Beach is one of Dorset’s secrets. Hidden within the RSPB Arne nature reserve, it’s a beautiful sweep of sand that feels completely unspoilt, peaceful and far removed from the busier coastline nearby. Reached on foot through woodland and heath, the beach opens out. The water is often still and it often feels more like a deserted island than somewhere just a short distance from Poole Harbour.
On clear days, the views across the water are stunning. You can look out towards Brownsea Island and the other low-lying islands scattered across Poole.
Why We Love It Here
We first discovered Shipstal many years ago, when our children were very young and desperate to spot deer. We set off through the reserve, not quite knowing what to expect, and stumbled across the beach almost by accident. It felt like a secret, one of those places you don’t forget once you’ve found it.
Long before Shipstal found wider attention after featuring on BBC Springwatch from Arne, it already felt special to us. Even now, it still does. This isn’t a beach where we lay out towels for the day; it’s a place we build into a walk. Standing on the sand, looking across the harbour towards Brownsea, it always feels a bit Famous Five — quiet and slightly magical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Parking is available at RSPB Arne, and there is an entry fee to the reserve, which includes parking. The walk to Shipstal Beach is well signposted from the main car park.
Yes, dogs are allowed on leads in much of the reserve, including the route to Shipstal Beach. Please note that there are no dog bins along the paths or at the beach, so it’s important to take waste back out with you.
Shipstal is well suited to families who enjoy walking, wildlife spotting and gentle exploration. The water here is often very shallow, making it more of a paddling or exploring spot rather than a swimming beach. It works best as part of a wider visit to Arne rather than a full beach day.
Facilities are available at the RSPB Arne visitor centre, where you’ll find toilets and a café. There are no facilities at the beach itself, so it’s best to come prepared with water and snacks.
Shipstal Beach is part of a wider day out at RSPB Arne, one of Dorset’s finest nature reserves. Nearby, you’ll also find the colour-changing waters of the Blue Pool, the historic village of Corfe Castle, and the Swanage Railway — all easy to combine into a relaxed day of exploring.
