Sculpture By The Lakes, Dorset: A Peaceful Hidden Gem Near Dorchester
Tucked away in the Dorset countryside, just outside Dorchester, lies one of the area’s most unexpected treasures, Sculpture by the Lakes. We’d known about it for years, but only recently took the time to visit. It completely exceeded expectations. It’s peaceful, beautifully curated, and unlike anywhere else in Dorset. A true hidden gem.
Whether you’re planning a relaxing weekend away or seeking a peaceful self-catering stay in Dorset, Sculpture by the Lakes is a calming addition to any Dorset itinerary. If you’re looking to switch off and discover something a little different, this is one place we’d definitely recommend visiting.

A Unique Dorset Experience
Set across 26 acres of tranquil lakes, reed beds, wildflower plantings and landscaped gardens, Sculpture by the Lakes is the creation of British sculptor Simon Gudgeon. But this isn’t your typical gallery experience. There are no white walls or formal exhibition rooms. Instead, art and nature blend seamlessly.
As you wander the grounds, sculptures appear almost unexpectedly:
- Rising from still waters
- Reflected perfectly in the lakes
- Hidden amongst trees, grasses and pathways.
There’s a calmness to the whole place that’s hard to describe until you experience it for yourself. There are more than 130 sculptures to see.

What Makes Sculpture by the Lakes So Special?
Part of its uniqueness lies in how different it feels from many Dorset attractions. It’s quieter, slower and intentionally designed to encourage visitors to pause rather than rush.
You won’t find arcades, crowds or packed tourist hotspots here.
Instead, it’s a place for:
- Slow walks
- Photography
- Art lovers
- Garden inspiration
- Peaceful reflection
It’s easy to see why it’s developed such a loyal following over the years and why it regularly appears on lists of Dorset’s best hidden gems. Despite its growing reputation, it still somehow feels under the radar, perhaps one reason we’ve only just discovered and explored it ourselves.

What to Expect When You Visit
Most visitors spend a couple of hours slowly exploring the grounds, although you could easily stay longer.
Gentle Walking Routes
Easy, well-maintained pathways guide you around the lakes and gardens, making the experience relaxed and accessible. Benches are dotted throughout the grounds, so it’s easy to stop, sit quietly and simply take it all in.

The Outdoor Sculpture Trail
Every sculpture feels deliberately placed within the landscape. Some are dramatic and striking, while others blend subtly into their surroundings. Even if you wouldn’t normally describe yourself as “into art”, the experience feels very approachable.
The Gallery, Café & Kitchen
One of the highlights for us was the café and kitchen area overlooking the lakes. It’s the kind of place where you order a coffee and end up staying far longer than planned.
Expect:
- Fresh lunches
- Homemade cakes
- Light bites
- Outdoor seating
There’s also a lovely gallery and shop area selling:
- Artwork
- Jewellery
- Homeware
- Sculptures
- Gifts from local makers and artists
It feels carefully curated rather than overly commercial, which we really appreciated.
Accessibility at Sculpture by the Lakes
One of the things many visitors ask about is accessibility, and with a mother-in-law who has a mobility issue, it’s perfect! The main pathways around the lakes are generally level and well-maintained, making large parts of the attraction suitable for visitors with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There are accessible facilities on site, too.
As with any outdoor attraction, some areas can be uneven depending on the weather and ground conditions, but overall, it feels thoughtfully designed and much easier to explore than many countryside attractions.
If accessibility is important for your Dorset stay, we also have a collection of accessible holiday cottages nearby, making it easier to enjoy days out like this.
Visiting Sculpture by the Lakes with Dogs
Good news for guests bringing their four-legged companions to Dorset. Sculpture by the Lakes is dog-friendly too. Well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome throughout much of the Sculpture Park and around the lakes. Dogs are also welcome in the Makers Yard, including the café and gallery spaces, so you can comfortably stop for coffee or lunch during your visit.
There are a few restricted areas where dogs aren’t permitted, including the Kitchen Garden and the Ornamental Gardens, to help preserve quieter landscaped spaces. If you’re planning a pet-friendly self-catering stay in Dorset, you can also browse our collection of dog-friendly cottages.

An Adults-Only Atmosphere
Another thing that makes Sculpture by the Lakes feel so calm is its adults-only atmosphere. Only visitors aged 14 and over are permitted. The policy is designed to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and is also in place because of the deep open water throughout the site.
