Overcombe Beach

Overcombe Beach sits quietly between Weymouth’s beaches at Greenhill and Bowleaze Cove, and it often feels like the in-between place locals quietly favour. A mix of sand and shingle with a wide promenade, it’s more open and less crowded.

The views stretch across Weymouth Bay towards Portland, and the long, flat promenade makes it ideal for walking, running and cycling.

Why We Love It Here

Overcombe is one of our go-to beaches for everyday moments. We love walking our dog along the promenade here.. We also have fond memories of teaching our children to cycle along this stretch too.

These days, it’s usually a walk or a run for us, with occasional Parkrun mornings.  The autumn and winter route follows the promenade at Overcombe before looping back towards the clock tower in Weymouth. There’s some good coffee and snack options here too. The Top Cat Kiosk, which has great snacks and seating on the beach, or the Oasis Café for something more substantial.

We’ve even kayaked along this stretch, paddling over from Bowleaze Cove, stopping at Top Cat for a break, and then continuing into Weymouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there parking?

Yes. There are a number of options, including parking at the Lodmoor Car Park, which is closer to Weymouth, or at the beach car park, located towards Preston.

Is it dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are allowed all year round and off lead.

Is it suitable for families and swimming?

Overcombe is well suited to families who prefer a quieter beach experience. Swimming is good in calm conditions, with plenty of space and a less hectic atmosphere than the central beach. The beach is not lifeguarded, so it’s best enjoyed by confident swimmers and families who are comfortable assessing sea conditions.

What facilities are at the beach?

There are public toilets. The promenade is also accessible.
There are also several cafés and kiosks, including the Top Cat Kiosk towards Lodmoor and Oasis Café at the Preston end of the beach. By the Oasis, there is also a Convenience Store, perfect for beach snacks and drinks. There is also the Harvester Spyglass, a short walk up the hill towards Bowleaze Cove, which has amazing views over the bay. Likewise, the charming Lookout Café is perfect all year round. A must for breakfast, for us on occasions.

What attractions are nearby?

Overcombe beach is well placed for things to do and visit. There is the excellent Weymouth SEALIFE Centre, Pirate Adventure Mini Golf, Sandworld, Lodmoor Country Park with its nature trail, pitch and putt, play area and green gym, Weymouth Bay Miniature Railway and the RSPB nature reserve. There is also the Front Skatepark, just set back and near the car park in Lodmoor.
