If you’re interested in learning more about the area, the West Bay Discovery Centre is a great place to start. Overlooking the harbour, it tells the story of West Bay’s fishing heritage, local wildlife and the Jurassic Coast. It’s one of those places many visitors walk past without realising what’s inside, yet it offers a fascinating introduction to the area.
Just a few minutes away, Bridport offers a completely different experience. The town is renowned for its markets, independent shops, galleries and creative atmosphere. We always enjoy wandering the historic streets, browsing the market stalls and stopping for coffee before heading back to the coast. Bridport Museum is also worth visiting, as it tells the story of the town’s famous rope- and net-making industry, which supplied the Royal Navy for centuries.

A little further along the coast, Abbotsbury is home to two of Dorset’s most celebrated attractions. Abbotsbury Swannery remains the world’s only managed colony of nesting mute swans, while Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens offer more than 20 acres of exotic planting, hidden pathways and seasonal events. Both have been firm family favourites over the years and make excellent days out.
If you’re prepared to venture a little further, Mapperton House and Gardens near Beaminster is often described as one of England’s finest manor houses. The gardens are beautiful throughout the year and offer a very different side of Dorset from the coastline. Lyme Regis is also within easy reach and is famous for The Cobb, its maritime history, and its connection to pioneering fossil hunter Mary Anning.
