Sandsfoot Beach sits quietly on the edge of Portland Harbour, beneath the historic ruins of Sandsfoot Castle and beside Castle Cove Sailing Club.. It feels completely different from Weymouth Beach. Instead of a lively promenade and a wide sandy bay, you’ll find a peaceful shoreline where history, wildlife and beautiful harbour views come together.
The beach is a mix of sand, pebbles and rocky areas, with fascinating rock pools revealed as the tide retreats. Looking across the harbour towards Portland, it’s a lovely place to pause, watch sailing boats come and go, or simply enjoy one of the quieter corners of the Dorset coast.
What makes Sandsfoot Beach so special, though, is its setting. Above the beach, the remains of Henry VIII’s Sandsfoot Castle sit in attractive gardens overlooking the harbour. Why We Love Sandsfoot Beach
Sandsfoot has always felt like one of Weymouth’s quieter gems.
When our children were younger, we often chose to spend afternoons exploring rock pools rather than building sandcastles. We’d happily lose track of time, looking for sea creatures before paddling in the calm harbour water.
One of the things we enjoy most is how a visit here naturally combines several experiences. We’ll often begin with a walk through Sandsfoot Castle Gardens, stopping to admire the views across Portland Harbour, before calling into Sandsfoot Café for coffee or lunch. From there, it’s only a short stroll down to the beach, where we’ll spend time exploring the shoreline or simply sitting and watching the sailing boats heading out onto the water.
It’s also somewhere we return to throughout the year. Even outside the summer months, the gardens, harbour views and a quieter atmosphere make it one of our favourite places for a coastal walk.
For us, Sandsfoot is a place we visit when we don’t want a traditional beach day. We come for the harbour views, the history, the rock pools and the chance to spend a few unhurried hours by the water. Somehow, we nearly always leave wondering why we don’t visit more often.
