Although Dorchester itself is inland, it’s well placed for watersports. Nearby Weymouth and Portland offer RIB rides, paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing. Jurassic Coast boat trips depart regularly from Weymouth Harbour, making it easy to combine town and sea in a single stay.

Dorchester is an excellent base for cycling, with everything from quiet country lanes to dedicated family-friendly trails. One of our favourite rides is the North Dorset Trailway, which follows a former railway line through beautiful countryside. Our children loved cycling here when they were younger because you can stop at the beautifully restored Shillingstone Station, where there’s a café, a small museum and even the opportunity to enjoy lunch inside a restored railway carriage. It’s a wonderful family day out and one we often recommend to guests staying in our family-friendly holiday cottages.
