We’ve spent countless family days here over the years. The River Frome is at the heart of outdoor life in Wareham. During the summer you can hire kayaks, paddleboards and small motorboats from Wareham Quay, or simply enjoy watching others on the water while relaxing beside the river. When our children were younger, hiring a little motorboat was always one of their favourite things to do, and it’s still something we recommend today.
If you’d rather take life at a gentler pace, Wareham River Cruises offer relaxing trips towards Poole Harbour, where you’ll often spot riverside wildlife along the way. Summer sunset cruises and trips to watch the Poole Quay fireworks make a lovely way to end a day exploring Purbeck. Just a few minutes from the town, Wareham Forest offers miles of peaceful woodland trails.
We’ve walked here countless times, while the Sika Trail became a favourite with our children because it was safe, traffic-free and ideal for family bike rides. It’s also one of our favourite places for dog walks, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife throughout the year.
We’ve played Wareham Golf Club several times over the years and always enjoy returning. The back nine provides a good challenge, while the views across the Purbeck countryside are some of the best on any Dorset course. Our Favourite Outdoor Days Around Wareham
Some of our favourite family days have started with coffee beside Wareham Quay before hiring a boat on the River Frome. Other times we’ve cycled the Sika Trail, walked at Arne or finished the day paddleboarding in Studland. One of the reasons we recommend Wareham so often is that every visit can be completely different.
Wareham is also an excellent base for discovering some of Dorset’s best outdoor experiences. Walk to Old Harry Rocks from Studland, explore the changing colours of The Blue Pool, spend a day at Dorset Adventure Park or discover the spectacular scenery of Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.
